== Love Notes ==
Hey there lovelies. I hope your Monday wasn't too crazy! I'm gonna keep it short tonight because I am nodding off.
I know sometimes we do things when we're not feeling very well that we regret. I know sometimes we get so far progress wise, but then we revert a little bit because the day was just too much. Sometimes we even say or do things that hurt others, even if we don't mean to, but it happens.
Just remember lovelies that that doesn't make you a bad person.
We all make mistakes. We are all human, and none of us are infallible.
You are going through so much. You are dealing with the stressors of the day, of the week, of the year, of the country, of the global climate, hell you're dealing with the stressors of keeping you and your loved ones fed, and clothed and sheltered, or maybe you're dealing with a physical ailment.
Whatever it is, you're dealing with A LOT. We all have bad days.
Making mistakes is how we grow. Give yourself some grace lovelies, you deserve grace too.
Anyway, that's enough out of me, goodnight crew, I hope your dreams are sweet, and your rest is full.

running thoughts about S3 E01 of The Mandalorian, "The Apostate"
jesus Christ of COURSE the Mandalorians have their child soldier investiture ceremonies RIGHT WHERE A FUCKING MOSASAUR CAN POP UP AND RUIN THINGS
oh my GOD you guys
simple FISH RADAR could've given you the early warning you needed to avoid this malarkey!
THIS IS WHY YOU'RE ALMOST EXTINCT
YES YOU'RE PERSECUTED BUT YOU'VE ALSO GOT NO SENSE
also okay wow
way to upstage Paz YET AGAIN Dindin
you slay the dragon when he can't AND you have A HOT NEW SPORTSCAR and you still have a CUTE BABY
also listen
THERE'S A SQUID IN THE WARP TUNNEL
or maybe it's one of those space whales that Ezra Bridger disappeared with?
ngl I was a little disappointed one of the street musicians on Nevarro wasn't Max Rebo
awwwww they put up a statue to droid Taika
Greef's clothes just keep getting bigger
"The belters are mining the asteroid fields at the edge of the system." Just like The Expanse! let us know how that works out for ya, you're already dressed a bit like Chrisjen Avasarala
absolutely no one is impressed by Grogu's weak sauce name
you know where else you could be apostate landed gentry? TATOOINE
WHERE YOU HAVE FRIENDS WHO LOVE YOU
I'm not saying Greef doesn't care about you but COME ON why move to a planet with one friend (since I don't expect we'll be seeing Cara again) when you could hang out with FOUR friends some of whom are VERY GOOD-LOOKING and talk with fun accents (Kiwi and Cowboy)
c'mon Greef they just wanna get drunk in a school
you know, for a pirate, you don't have a very good hat. Hondo Ohnaka's hat would take a shit on your hat.
GREEF HAS TWO LITTLE BRIDESMAID DROIDS CARRYING HIS CAPE
A GOLD STAR TO WHOSEVER IDEA THAT WAS
what do you mean you need him back
he EXPLODED in LAVA
what makes you think the brainy parts are even there?
I REALLY FEEL LIKE IG-11 WAS A LOT MORE BLOWN UP AT THE TIME THAN THIS MAKES IT LOOK
I mean always happy to have more Taika
assuming he still talks like Taika
maybe his voicebox is effed up
maybe now he sounds like Jemaine Clement
"now that's using your head" says Din
JESUS Din
oh okay it's the tiny cute mechanics from the sequels
HOW DID YOU CRAWL IN THERE
a new side quest begins
did Grogu want to cuddle the tiny mechanic or eat it
YOU KNOW WHO YOU COULD TAKE WITH YOU TO HELP YOU ON YOUR QUEST
COBB VANTH
JUST SAYING
I bet he's feeling a lot perkier by now! and would do basically anything for you if you bought him a drink and put your hand on his knee under the table
like you wouldn't even have to rub it
ohhhhhhhhhhhh he's starting to deliberately TEACH the baby
the pirate is suddenly talking MORE PIRATEY and saying things like Avast
I miss the Space Scotsman, remember him? "Tell that to Kanjiklub!"
CAPTAIN GREENBEARD
will not be appearing much in this episode, I suppose they're just introducing him so he can be a recurring and very moist foe
With Din talking to Grogu so much more, explaining things to him, do you think his little speech delay will start to come right?
say what you will about Bo-Katan Kryze, she certainly can strike a louche pose on a throne. She's no Darth Maul, mind you. Then again, who is? (blows a kiss towards hell for him)
If she's so depressed and all her plans are fucked, why is she still striking poses on thrones?
get a job Bo-Katan
you can always work private security
or be an aesthetician because given what we know about your age clearly you have SOME incredible skincare secret (and your hair always looks nice)
I mean... the planet was poisoned decades ago, that's why everyone was living under domes.
That felt pretty short, I have to say.
I like how you can see from the concept art over the end credits that both Bo-Katan's throne and her pose got fancier over time

Look, Izzy is a complex character. I understand this.
But that man really looked at a 'just beginning to heal from a heartbreak' Edward Teach who was finally up and about, cleaning his living space and beginning to fully embrace himself with honesty and vulnerability and just ....CRUSHED him.
"I should have let the English kill you."
The hurt. That hurt look on his face! Remember, Izzy sheltered him from the crew for those few days, covering for him and sending in Lucius, keeping everyone else at bay. Ed thought he understood. And this is where he begins to realise Izzy only ever cared about preserving the image of Blackbeard. Not his dignity as a person in pain.
"This...whatever it is you've become, is a fate worse than death."
You can see him try to recover enough to be 'tough' and laugh it off.
"Well, I am still Blackbeard."
And Izzy responds loudly and aggressively, encroaching on his space, shoving the mocking cartoon image of Ed in his face and saying that this is the only version of him that is acceptable.
"NO. This! This is Blackbeard. Not some namby pamby in a silk gown PINING FOR HIS BOYFRIEND."
Izzy mocks his pain. Proving he never understood, merely tolerated and humoured him. He mocks Ed's very real affection and love for Stede and belittles the hope he held onto that Stede might come back.
The betrayal stings and Ed explodes, throwing Izzy back against a wall by his throat.
"CHOOSE YOUR NEXT WORDS WISELY, DOG!"
But this of course is exactly what Izzy wants. And he doesn't only approve, he tries to initiate physical affection immediately afterwards. Attempting to cradle his face.
"There he is."
Edward smacks his hand away and if you listen carefully, gasps in dismay before physically stepping back, distancing himself. He's disgusted. His emotions are being toyed with, not just as a means to an end, but for Izzy's own gratification.
He expected the angry outburst would pull Izzy into line but it played directly into his hands. The shock and anger is clear on his face and he takes a few deep breaths here, trying to get his bearings again.
Izzy doesn't let up, speaking as he takes a few steps closer, slowly encroaching on Ed's space again.
"Blackbeard is my captain. I serve Blackbeard, not Edward. Edward better watch his fucking step."
Con O'Neill makes the acting choice here to glance downwards a few times while speaking, not to avoid eye contact but instead doing the same thing he did with Lucius during the "Have you ever been sketched" scene. His eyes are flicking down to Ed's mouth. Body language for "I am thinking about doing intimate things with you." Objectifying him at the same time as he threatens him.
The words here are important as well, Izzy just stated that Edward, who he is and who he has settled into as a person, is no longer safe around Izzy.
When Izzy leaves and we hear the door close you can hear Ed let go of a long breath, sighing as he instinctively attempts to pull the robe closed because in that moment he felt exposed and vulnerable and didn't like it.
His expression at the beginning of the scene and at this moment are polar opposites. His face was open, happy and calm. Now it's tight, closed off and troubled.
And the final nail in the coffin comes when we hear the men up on deck calling for "Eddie" to come sing them another song.
In my head, this is the moment Ed realises that those men could get him killed.
Taika and Con absolutely slayed the acting in this scene and the whole arc for season 2 arguably pivots off it. Kings.
Having said that, Izzy Hands it is ON SITE for what you did to my boy.

HI I JUST FINISHED OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH FOR THE FIRST TIME (way late on bandwagon I know) AND IM ABSOLUTELY LOSING MY MIND IT WAS SO GOOD
Here are some of my main thoughts and I will try to keep it a little less unhinged :D
SPOILERS AHEAD
They’re so gay, your honor
The b a t h t u b bo n d i n g scene
I’m in love with a taika
As a voltron fan, seeing Rhys in this role was lovely
Omg omg non-binary rep? As a non-binary person that was so beautiful and lovely and healing
The moment Ed laid eyes on Stede he was a goner omfg poor man
Jim and Olu omg friends to loverssss slay
The acting was genuinely so good I felt so absolutely unbelievably sucked in
I started watching episode one MONTHS ago, and I didn’t like it. I decided to give it another shot and watched the whole show today and AHHDHS thank god I did
Stede and Ed are 100% autistic/neurodivergent and I ADORE them for it
Seeing so many romance cliches but with older gay men was so lovely? Like there was emotional intimacy and realness and god my brain is on fire I can’t word rn.
Also hearing they/them used so casually for Jim even with the Nun who raised them made me so happy T^T
WHEN THEY FINALLY KISSED I LITERALLY SCREAMED
Gay people are so dramatic and I adore how fucking upset Ed is as much as it hurts me. The fort was just so good.
Lucius is wing man, confidant, and icon #1 always.
Taika crying makes me cry. Every time.
I always wanted to be a pirate as a little kid. I find myself relating to Stede bonnet a lot. Wanting to be in an adventure but minus the bloodshed. Overwhelming guilt. So much love and wanting the world for the people around him. God it was just so fucking good and so fucking funny. I now see why the world was freaking out. Honestky kind of glad that I waited until now, when seasON 2 WAS ANNOUNCED AHHHH
Please feel free to scream with me/share your favorite parts/analysis/fun facts/ gay yearning etc.
thank you. The end.

Every once in a while, I gather all my courage and open my Facebook to see what boils my guts this time and the winner of today’s evening is “MCU died with Iron Man” and listen *cracks her knuckles* strap in cause we’re in for a ride. Before we get into it - yes, this is my opinion and you’re more than welcome to disagree.
MCU has its problems, it undeniably has - I wouldn’t want to get into the bigger ones since I’m still educating myself (biggest issue marvel did and I disagree with is whitewashing characters for the MCU’s needs) but to be honest, even if there’s much more content to keep up with (movies x series at the same time), I was never happier to watch the stories unfold.
My personal favorite is Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan - I’ve came across her in the Avengers game and immediately, I ran off to buy some comics to read about her because she’s so fricking cool. When I saw first trailer for Love and Thunder and realized that Taika is about to adapt the Mighty Thor arc on screen, I almost lost my shit because Jane’s story is one of the most meaningful ones I’ve ever read. I’ve never heard about Moon Knight (I just knew that somehow Dracula owns him money) but going through the adaptation of Steve, Marc and Jake’s story left me breathless and eager for more, so I learned about the ever changing adaptions of Moon Knight. MoM making Wanda the villain and introducing America - chef’s kiss. Sam Wilson officially becoming Captain America - YESSS!!! Shang-Chi made me laugh so hard I cried because home girl Awkwafina was slaying so fucking hard. Now, I’m just waiting for Miles Morales officially appearing there (yes I know about the Spider-Verse) and I’ll be more than happy to die. And Loki? Loki was a fun trip down the memory lane sprinkled with new lore which I super enjoyed! And who could complain about No Way Home?
So no, no, no - the MCU didn’t die with Iron Man. And it won’t. There’s plenty more to come and to explore various characters from various settings. The problem for the people is that there’s not just five dudes and Nat in tight spandex to follow around but a lot of ministories of distinguishible characters to follow. And I love each second of it.

Thor: Love and Thunder Almost Made Me Believe In God Again
By Elise Letrondo
I’m not a huge Marvel person, but through a chance viewing on a weird date, Thor: Ragnarok became one of my favorite films. I credit this largely to the writing and vision of director Taika Waititi, but also to the film’s success in fleshing out the complicated themes of loss and identity. Identity is something Thor seems to struggle with as a character, so I was interested to see where Thor: Love and Thunder would land him. And though the film was nothing like I expected, I was pleasantly surprised by it.
The plot is kicked off by establishing the backstory of the its villain, Gorr (The God Butcher). Gorr was once an average man from a tribe who worshiped the sun god. Well, Mr. Sun God didn’t deliver, and Gorr’s tribe all died of heat and hunger, including his beloved daughter.
So you can imagine Gorr is kind of upset. Long story short, Gorr gets ahold of the sun god (and a handy god-killing sword called the “Necrosword”) and slays him for his negligence, eventually becoming the only being in the universe with the power to kill gods (hence “God Butcher”). He also transforms into what is essentially a live action rendering of the character Turbo from Wreck-It Ralph, so that was petrifying. In this aggressively ugly form, Gorr begins a sweep of the universe’s gods, killing them all and their worshipers along with them. Bad news for Thor, a god, and anyone in the theater who brought small children.
There are several moments of characters in this movie meeting their gods and heroes, and with those moments so much disillusionment in finding those heroes don’t have the power and goodwill they were fabled to have. And what happened as a result of that disappointment? They fought gods, which was not only deeply entertaining to see played out, but got me thinking. There have been so many moments in my life when I -in spite of the religious devotion I was raised to uphold - wanted to literally fight God.
I can’t say I’ve lost my child and entire community to mass famine like Gorr. But as a non-practicing Christian watching Gorr confront the gods, I felt a resonance in spite of myself. To be able to question his god, the one whom he devoted his livelihood to worshiping in return for some sort of prize, must have been a satisfying thing. To tap into that human yearning for fairness and say, “Hey! I did all the shit they said I had to. Don’t I get anything in return for that?” I can’t count how many times I’ve felt that way. Let down by a system that sang songs of care and reward. How could the church brand faith as a superpower when it inevitably made me feel so powerless?
Powerlessness is a strong theme throughout the film, from Gorr being unable to save his daughter through prayer to Jane Foster’s fight against illness. In fact, powerlessness is something that Thor has been battling for several movies now after losing his homeland, his eye, and his battle with Thanos. Fate keeps beating him down as if to remind him that, despite being a literal god, he’s not as strong as he thought himself to be. As it happens, none of the characters in Thor: Love and Thunder are.
I felt that the characters in the film offered simple lessons in self-mastery. Gorr teaches us to be wise with whom we choose battles. Jane teaches us that some battles are not designed to be fought alone. Thor teaches us that, in spite of our best efforts, not every battle can be won. The characters in the film created suffering for themselves and others trying to fight unchangeable circumstances. But the solution to Gorr’s crisis was not to kill the sun god, or even all the gods in the universe. Similarly, Thor couldn’t save Jane by holding her back from Mjolnir. They had to accept their powerlessness. But maybe the acceptance of powerlessness is, in itself, power. Or, if nothing else, by accepting powerlessness we gain the freedom to embrace life as it comes.

8 & 29 for the Loki asks 💚 I know the Ragnarok topic can be extremely polarizing, so no pressure to answer that one if you'd rather not!
8: Are you anti Ragnarok or Pro Ragnarok?
I am absolutely fine with answering it but I decided to put this one under a keep reading tag to avoid negativity, haha! ♥ So, the thing is, I don’t hate Ragnarok. I watch the film a lot and I devour the Loki moments like a starved vampire. It’s a good movie and it’s entertaining to watch--but it has its weaknesses. Of course, these are just my personal thoughts and opinions, so here we go:
Decisions were made about Thor that I do not like (I feel like he sort of went back to his old arrogant arsehole-self from the beginning of the first Thor film and the fact he just left Loki behind with the obedience disk on was very out of character. I mean, of course he would try and betray him after Thor tells him that their paths diverged a long time ago and that Loki should indeed stay on Sakaar rather than asking him to return home with him. Loki knew that if he joined Thor nothing at all would change, he would still be treated like a villain with “imagined slights” and Loki would continue to live in Thor’s shadow. He’d rather stay on Sakaar then and make himself comfortable with the bounty he’d get for Thor and at the very same time know his brother safe given he saw with his own eyes what Hela is capable of. See this answer for more on what I think about Loki’s motivation, if you’re interested. ♥
So let’s face it: Tom slayed it. Tom saved Loki and made it possible for me to make sense of his character arc and actions (like him having time to heal and appearing more blithe because of his time spent as Odin on Asgard during Thor’s absence) despite what Taika decided to do.
Loki was humiliated and bullied throughout the movie to the point they made him look weak and powerless (and as I have mentioned in a previous question, as someone who has been bullied before, this is absolutely not okay or funny in any way), there were quite a few contradictions (such as Valkyrie calling Loki out for “feeling the sudden urge to do the right thing” when that was literally what she did five minutes ago) and the amount of improvisation created a few plot holes that could have been avoided as well as OOC characters--I personally don’t really recognise Thor and Bruce Banner anymore, even if the latter went a little bananas after being the Hulk for so long. Just compare Bruce Banner in “The Avengers” to Bruce Banner in “Ragnarok”. Completely different people!
The fact that Loki was the “butt of the joke” like Tom put it himself is the only fear I somehow still had for the Loki TV series, I must admit, and I hope that they won’t make him a bad ruler (since in the VOTE LOKI comics, he loses the election), for he truly isn’t, there is enough proof of that. Loki is smart and mischievous and he is always two steps ahead and most of all, he is one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. ♥
29: Do you have any Loki merch?
Ohhh yes. Where do I even start? I consider myself extremely lucky that I am in the financial position of being able to purchase Loki fan merch that makes me happy every now and then and by telling you about all the Loki things that I own, I do not want to make anyone feel bad about themselves or let alone brag. The stuff I own I started collecting in 2017 so it has been a few years and a lot of things were gifts too, please keep that in mind. I might actually make a TikTok about all the Loki things that I own at some point because let me tell you, it’s a lot.
I have a Loki mug, Loki slippers, Loki socks, Loki pyjamas, a few Loki t-shirts, two Loki dresses, two Loki jackets, two Loki pullovers, a Loki bag, a Loki pen, a Loki wallet, a handful of Funko Pops and Loki figurines as well as my homemade Tesseract, Loki’s sceptre that my dad made for me and a homemade mouse pad, several books, three Loki plush toys, two Loki pillows and Loki jewellery (including rings and necklaces, a Loki head piece, and the “Loki for president” badge that I designed myself). *gasps for air* The next item on my list is an actual costume. ♥

New Thor: Love and Thunder Trailer Breakdown – Gorr, Zeus, Jane, and More!
https://ift.tt/bM4Sk09
It finally happened!
The first Thor: Love and Thunder trailer was all good vibes, man. Bright colors. Taika Waititi’s trademark sense of humor. The promise of the continuing redemption arc of the God of Thunder. An amazing instrumental version of Guns n’ Roses “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”
And the second Thor: Love and Thunder trailer? Well, it has bright colors, that director’s humor (and voice), the aforementioned redemption arc, that killer GnR tune again. But then we get the vibe shift at exactly one minute in, with the long-awaited introduction (and official first look at) Christian Bale as the film’s big villain, Gorr the God-Butcher.
Before we go any further into what that means, you should have a look for yourself:
While there isn’t QUITE as much to unpack here as we did in the other Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, there are still a few things that are worth discussing. Let’s start with the biggest one…
Gorr the God-Butcher
Now, in the comics, Gorr is every bit as intense as that impossibly metal name makes him sound. Gorr here talks about the selfishness of the gods. Why? Because Gorr is a being whose prayers were never answered, who lived a miserable, hard life, and whose family died of starvation and disease while he prayed for salvation. When his “prayers” were answered in the form of a powerful alien sword, he decided to take a, shall we say, proactive approach to getting the gods’ attention.
Oh and that sword? It’s got the even more impossibly metal name of All-Black the Necrosword. I’m not going to explain its history here because it will give me and everyone else a migraine, but needless to say, it has ties to both Venom AND the Celestials (of Eternals fame).
It drinks the blood of the gods he slays and helps him create shadow-berserkers to do his bidding. Pretty sure that’s what those tendrils are above. AND we’re pretty sure that’s what everyone is fighting when Jane Thor first shows up.
ANYWAY, back to our guy…Gorr was created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic in 2013, as part of the same Thor series that eventually introduced the Jane Foster Thor to official Marvel Comics continuity. We wrote more about the history of Gorr here. Keep in mind that the main Gorr story in the comics was almost impossibly dark and gruesome, a horror-tinged sword-and-sorcery epic that spanned the cosmos, and in which entire pantheons of gods were, well, butchered at Gorr’s angry hands.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Hell, they even recreated one page from the comics almost perfectly in both of these trailers, with the shot of the very dead Falligar the Behemoth from Aaron and Ribic’s Thor: God of Thunder #3.
Something tells me we won’t be seeing quite that kind of body count in this film. On the other hand, you don’t bring Thor to Olympus and introduce Zeus unless you need some recognizable god to be butchered and establish Gorr as a credible threat. Which brings us to…
Russell Crowe as Zeus
Russell Crowe is clearly going to have the time of his life in this movie, ain’t he? We’re still holding out hope that this movie also introduces the Marvel version of Hercules somehow. But there’s one small problem here…
Here is King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) fighting Gorr…with what appears to be Zeus’ thunderbolt. Ummm…. something tells me we shouldn’t get too attached to Russell Crowe’s Zeus.
Anyway, on to some more cheerful stuff…
Jane Foster as Thor
Interestingly, this trailer puts to rest the theory that Jane could possibly be a variant from another timeline. This is definitely “sacred timeline” Jane, based on her discussion of her history with Thor.
There’s two ways we can read their conversation about how long it has been since they’ve seen each other: one is that Jane is just kind of over Thor. But the other, given the five year gap in their assumptions, is that Jane was indeed a victim of “the snap.”
Also, this isn’t an Easter egg or anything, but it’s pretty clear that Mjolnir can break apart to mess up bad guys’ days in individual pieces.
Thor’s Helmet
OK, so MAYBE this is a reach, but given how shy these movies have been about letting Thor wear a helmet, I’m gonna go for something here. Despite these scenes being next to each other in the trailer, it’s clear that Thor first seeing the other Thor wielding Mjolnir and then discovering it is Jane do not happen in the same battle. In the comics, Thor was depressed over his unworthiness to wield Mjolnir, and pined for it like a lost lover (or an addict) he so desperately wanted to be worthy again. He’s even wearing his costume from The Unworthy Thor era when he first sees her (and his King Thor suit when he exclaims “Jane?” in the trailer’s next shot).
What does this have to do with the helmet? I’d like to think that he sees Jane Thor and at least subconsciously is trying to emulate whatever she has going on in the hopes it will make him, if not more worthy (we established that in Endgame anyway), at least more like “himself.”
Thanos’ Girlfriend?
This shot of Jane is cool enough on its own, but let’s have a look at those statues behind her. On the right we have The Living Tribunal (whose statue also appeared in Loki, and who was glimpsed ever-so-briefly in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and What If…? stalwart Uatu, the Watcher.
On the left, though, things are a little more tricky. Up front, that does appear to be Death. As in the cosmic embodiment of Death. As in, the Jodie Foster to Thanos’ John Hinckley Jr. in the original Infinity Gauntlet comics.
Behind Death? It’s a little harder to tell. That next bust looks kind of like how Jack Kirby drew Zeus in his Thor comics, but it’s hard to tell. No idea who the third figure is in the background. Is this a hall of cosmic deities who Gorr has slain?

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
For the longest time I’ve been mostly embarrassed to admit that my favorite Marvel superhero isn’t the more popular Ironman or Captain America or even Hulk — nope, mine is Chris Hemsworth as Thor. There wasn’t much to defend my choice, what with the lukewarm THOR movie and the critically panned THOR 2; or the fact that even across all the Avengers movies that Thor appeared in, Loki is the far more interesting and developed character. I can’t explain it, Thor’s not the greatest Avenger portrayed, but I’m so weak for him and every scene that he’s in. So one can imagine how I felt with THOR RAGNAROK — like they have finally paid off my loyalty and constant devotion, like the rest of the world can finally catch up with why Hemsworth as Thor is SUCH a great decision. All I’m saying is, if I was able to say good things about Chris and the Thor franchise for the past six years, what more NOW, what more after this? So I guess it isn’t surprising that a week later, I’m still on a Ragnarok hangover and I keep trying to remember if Avengers and/or Civil War are better than this movie (right now, it’s a resounding NO)
In all the interviews, the cast kept deferring to Taika Waititi and the wonderful tone and atmosphere that he brought on set — encouraging improvisation, deciding from the get-go that this movie will be “different” from the previous Thor installments. Definitely Taika had the most to do with it, turning Thor (the character and the series) more explicitly hilarious and infusing him with an adorable personality, but I feel like the way that the cast went with it was also instrumental. I won’t say that Thor 1 and 2 were completely devoid of humour; they did have those small moments, and even in the Avengers movies they gave Thor one or two moments or lines that made me chuckle. But this one was different — I was laughing out loud the whole time, gasping unreservedly and feeling completely blown away by everything that was happening. Does the ending leave something wanting? A little bit (especially the Ragnarok showdown) but I feel it’s negligible compared to everything else that happened before it, and even what happened after it. It’s just so well done. It’s a cinematic masterpiece and I can’t think of a single thing to fault it, except perhaps, MORE PLEASE!, and also maybe a better outfit for Odin, and also maybe more Thor/Loki/Hela interaction.
I just can’t get over the GORGEOUSNESS of everything, referring not only to its hella ripped and unbelievably attractive cast (just when I think that I can’t possibly be more infatuated with Chris Hemsworth, in every succeeding movie he proves me 100% wrong [the hair??? the arms??? and now this time THE HUMOUR ohmygod he really has no regard for human life]; and then Tom Hiddleston comes in and shows up in this all-black suit that is OBVIOUSLY painted on), but also all of the production and the sets and the visual feasts that every single frame seemed to be. Every character is spot-on, funny in his or her own way (Anthony Hopkins as Loki as Odin!!! I never thought I needed this in my life!!!), and so beautiful they couldn’t be real (Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie… absolutely slayed me… then Cate Blanchett as Hela??? how is she ageless???). I just couldn’t keep up with everything because I’m not used to this pace and tone for Thor; I can’t imagine what they’ll have to do with Infinity War to match Ragnarok’s brilliance. Looking back now at all the Marvel films I loved the most pre-Ragnarok, they seem so dreary and dark and DEFINITELY not as funny. I mean sure as a piece of cinema perhaps there’s a bit more to be credited to Winter Soldier or Civil War or the Avengers I guess, but to me those are all out the window. Maybe I’ll be a bit less biased once I’ve gotten over this honeymoon phase.
But how can a person get over Ragnarok??? I can’t say. It’s too much for my poor heart that they finally gave me the Loki/Thor banter that I deserve. I mean yes they’re awfully cute and affectionate in Thor 1; and even in Avengers Thor is still overly protective of Loki; and oh man that death scene in Thor 2 went straight for my feelings; BUT THEN THIS! IN RAGNAROK! I get the Get Help scene, and these two ridiculous brothers standing outside a home for the elderly, and then that scene in Norway when Thor can barely control his rage towards Loki. I’m so in love with this character development, and Tom captures it quite well in this interview where he says something like— now Thor is indifferent towards Loki and Loki doesn’t know how to take it, he’s so used to Thor’s love and now that the opposite of love is not hate but indifference, Loki’s off-kilter (or something to that effect) and WOW MAN that really got to me. Hiddleston’s always been a fantastic actor and I always maintained before that he’s much better than Hemsworth in that area (credit where credit is due, and all), and THIS is the arc that Loki deserves, that is deserving of Hiddleston’s talent!!! Same for Thor— I like it better that he’s finally less noble, now he’s blaming Loki much more unabashedly, now he finally didn’t fall for a classic Loki trick — it’s growth for both of them, and that really made me puff up like a momma hen. I think the complexity of their relationship and the true bond that they shared as brothers is most illustrated in this movie— before, they always referred to it, like “we fought together, we played together” but this time we actually see the mischief that they got to as boys. They’ve always been funny, I’ve always liked and adored their dynamic, but having it amped up a few levels in Ragnarok — they properly destroyed me, now I’m just a ball of feelings for the two of them and I don’t know how to take it.
If I went on and on about Thor Ragnarok I’ll never stop; suffice to say this is one of the BEST movies of 2017 and one of the highlights of my year — and that’s saying something, since it’s been a pretty good year and I’ve been grateful for a lot of things. For this I’m doubly and triply grateful. Thor Ragnarok!!!! Absolutely brilliant!!! When can I see it again!!! *grabby hands*

FIVE NEW TV SERIES COMING IN 2019 .  .  .
hello! i hope you are doing super well and are having a good january so far. one of my favourite ways to relax at the end of a long day is by watching an episode or two of a good tv show. in many ways, i tend to favour television over film. 2019 looks like it holds a lot of promise for the small screen. with the return of many old and some new, television is sure to draw in audiences worldwide this year. here are just five shows that we can get excited about seeing on our screens very soon.
game of thrones , season eight . . .
game of thrones is perhaps the most recogniseable and critically acclaimed tv shows in our history. with a film-like budget of $15 million per episode, season eight is the much anticipated conclusion to the show that shaped tv today. game of thrones has been off air for over a year now and fans will have to wait until april to see it back. i foresee this season being a very much a divisive one; there are bound to be people disappointed with the ending as much as there will be people who love it. personally, i felt season seven had many weaknesses and i worry that the writers may have trouble trying to correct them in the future. but i won’t get too much into that! i plan on doing a full series on game of thrones once this season has aired, so i shall reserve all judgement and opinions for then!
mr robot , season four . . .
unfortunately another well-loved series will come to an end in 2019. it was announced in august of 2018 that the fourth season of mr robot would be its final season. this is an amazing series that has, for some reason, fallen under the radar of many tv fanatics. if you haven’t seen it yet and are a fan of anything thrilling then i encourage you to check it out! the final season’s premiere date has not yet been confirmed. it is likely to return around october time, so you have some time to catch up if you have missed out!
tin star , season two . . .
tin star is a massively underrated favourite of mine, debuting its first season back in 2017. unfortunately, it’s exclusive to sky atlantic and amazon prime, which ultimately does massively cut viewership. it follows an english police chief (tim roth) with a violent, dark past that comes to haunt him in the peaceful village of little big bear in the candian rockies. it takes you on so many twists and turns that you can never quite be sure what will happen next. i’ve heard some criticism of it but between beautiful cinematography, stellar acting and a thrilling plot, i guarantee there will be something about it you will love. season two is set to release on january 24th of this year.
i am the night , season one . . .
i am the night is a new short series to debut in january. starring chris pine and india eisley, it follows a young woman in pursuit of her past. the path she follows leads her sickeningly closer to a gynecologist involved in the infamous black dahlia slaying. it’s directed by patty jenkins, who proved herself to be a competent director with her most recent project, wonder woman. the series was announced back in 2017 under the name one day she’ll darken. it was renamed to i am the night in november of that year.
what we do in the shadows , season one . . .
what we do in the shadows was originally a 2014 movie. the new zealand comedy-horror mockumentary followed three vampire housemates who are still learning to adapt to the intricacies of modern day. the original was lead by taika waititi, who is now, perhaps, best known for his work on thor: ragnarok. the tv series is certainly set to have some differences to the original source material, mainly that it is coming out of america (though i think it is still set in nz) with a different cast. however, waititi has maintained some involvement in the project which shows some promise. what we do in the shadows is one of my favourite films, so i was very excited to discover it was getting a series. i’m trying to keep my expectations at a low though, to avoid disappointment. nevertheless, i will certainly be checking it out. i encourage you to check out what we do in the shadows, 2014, if you haven’t already!

2017′s Top Renters!
2017 is quickly fading away, and our top renters have pretty much cemented their performance spots. You know how, when you come in, the first thing you wanna do after saying hi is look at all the movies on the counter and see what other folks have recently returned? Now you can check out the definitive list of our top renters, along with Ashlyn's grades for each!
Arrival - PG-13, Science Fiction [At first glance this looks like a typical alien movie. Keep looking. Arrival is actually a quietly intense picture about language, time, and the human spirit, with a perfect performance from Amy Adams and a haunting score. Youngsters might be bored, but older kids/teens/grown ups are equipped to appreciate this masterpiece.]
Hidden Figures - PG, Time Machine [We’ve all heard the story of John Glenn’s historic launch into and return from space. What we didn’t hear about was the people who got him there and back safely, including Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan- three Black women who busted through any nonsense barriers with expertise and class. All three lead actresses are must-watch on their own, and together they are magic! Everyone should see this film.]
Moana - PG, Family [This animated tale follows Moana, a young woman in ancient Polynesia, as she sets forth on an adventure to dabble with demigods and save her island. Great animation and truly awesome vocals from newcomer Auli’i Cravalho make this an epic for all ages.]
Moonlight - R, Independent [Beautiful, from start to finish. Moonlight is three pivotal moments in a young man’s life, and each second of his story deserves your undivided attention. There is inappropriate material for children and younger teens will mostly be bored, but older teens and adults are dead inside if they don’t love this.]
Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them - PG-13, Adventure [JK Rowling is at it again with this visually stunning addition to the wizarding world that chronicles the early career of Newt Scamander and the rise of Grindewald, decades before a little boy with a scar on his forehead would be born. Kids old enough to have seen all the Potter movies will be fine with this one, too.]
Captain Fantastic - R, Drama [This one sounds like a superhero flick but it is most decidedly not. Instead of capes, this one centers around Viggo Mortensen’s character, who finds himself at a loss for how to proceed in raising the six children he and his late wife had been “unschooling” deep in the wilderness. Brilliant performances and some real close to home themes for Santa Cruz. It’s a big kid/grown ups movie, for sure.]
Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children - PG-13, One Of A Kind Directors [Tim Burton returns to his regular ol’ weirdo form with this adaptation of some of Ransom Riggs’ book series. It’s perfect for all those kids out there who just love being creeped out!]
20th Century Women - R, Independent [Mike Mills here writes and directs a love letter to his mother, played by Annette Bening, after the success of his ode to his father in 2010′s Beginners. Bening, Elle Fanning, and Greta Gerwig are great! Probably only adults will appreciate the story and these performances, which do also include everything you might remember from your own adolescence and then some.]
The Accountant - R, Action [Ben Affleck plays an autistic accountant who has been trained since childhood to deal with his disorders with either meticulous mathematics or efficient violence. As he investigates a huge financial discrepancy at a tech company, walls from his past and present begin to close in. Older teens will appreciate the Bourne-like action with more of an edge.]
Rogue One - PG-13, Science Fiction [This is set in the Star Wars universe, but without most of the characters familiar to the Skywalker saga. Thankfully, this does two wonderful things for the franchise: it proves that an expanded universe is possible, and it pulls together great actors for good performances in a film that feels more like Saving Private Ryan than A New Hope. It’s a little heavy for kids, but ten year olds will be fine, and adults who think they don’t like Star Wars should check this out!]
Doctor Strange - PG-13, Capes & Comics [Marvel brings us a new origin story here for someone who will be a major player in later Avengers-type events, and likely take over for Tony Stark eventually. Dr Stephen Strange is also an egotistical, handsome, technically talented bad-boy; he is a top surgeon until he crashes his car and crushes his hands, and tries to learn mystic arts in a last-ditch effort to heal himself. It’s a fun ride with dazzling special effects and another time-travel-adjacent performance from Rachel McAdams, who I am convinced is a time traveler herself. Pretty much all the kids can watch this one.]
Hunt For The Wilderpeople - PG-13, Coming Of Age [Before Taika Waititi rocked Thor: Ragnarok (but after he slayed us with What We Do In The Shadows), he brought us this gem! Ricky Baker gets placed at a foster home out in the sticks of New Zealand and ends up running from the law and finding his destiny in the outback. Heartwarming, hilarious, quotable, and presented without judging the characters. You’ll watch it five times, with most of the family!]
Logan - R, Capes & Comics [Hugh Jackman makes his final turn as Wolverine an unexpectedly fantastic one. In this “old man Logan” storyline, the X-Men are dead, Professor X is a senile old man, and Logan has to carry him, the weight of the world, and the new challenge of a mutant child needing safe passage over the border. Glorious, violent, poetic work, this. 16+.]
Hell Or High Water - R, Thriller [This chronicles both the moving, realistic story of serial bank robbers and the investigation of the hard-nosed detectives trying to anticipate the next crimes committed by this team. Great, underestimated film! Probably best left to older teens.]
Masterminds (2017) - PG-13, Comedy [What a weird movie, y’all. Maybe teenagers watching it will have it fully impressed upon them how much crime does not pay stupid people. Grown-ups will find some deep performances in an unevenly paced film, and probably be horrified this is based on a true story.]
Fences - PG-13, Drama [Denzel Washington directs this adaptation of August Wilson’s play and teams up with Viola Davis to give us a total emotional knock-out of a film. The themes are fairly adult, and there’s some language, but tweens should be just fine.]
Ghostbusters (2017) - PG-13, Comedy [Everyone who dissed this movie is a monster. It’s hilarious and has some actual spooky parts too. The special effects are just enough, too. Most ten year olds will be fine.]
The Magnificent Seven - PG-13, Western [This is a remake of an adaptation. Very confusing. If your tweens were okay with the original, this one doesn’t change much except for having Denzel Washington’s steadying presence and Chris Pratt’s wisecracks.]
Get Out - R, Horror [This is a horror film on many levels. There is some blood, but that’s not the focus. This one is truly a spectacle and will likely be required watching for the various grown-ups popping in the shop. 16+.]
Wonder Woman - PG-13, Capes & Comics [There is war-related peril, some fight scenes where people die non-bloody deaths, and some suggestive jokes. Likely fine 9ish and up. Also SO MUCH FUN!]

The Best Horror Comedies of the 21st Century
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Spooky season isn’t just about candy and trauma (although we enjoy those things as much as the next person), it’s also a perfect time to gather together for giggles. Horror and comedy go hand in hand and as well as the classics like An American Werewolf in London, Young Frankenstein and Army of Darkness the 21st century has coughed up plenty of new gems. We’ve rounded up 13 of our favourite to delight and amuse you this Halloween.
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)
Just because you’re a redneck, it doesn’t make you a psycho, in this deceptively adorable anti-slasher where a bunch of vacationing college kids keep accidentally getting themselves killed trying to escape from the harmless Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and his lovely friend Dale (Tyler Labine). Eli Craig’s directorial debut is gruesome, gory, and very funny, but the movie is more than just a gimmick: there are some top horror twists here, too.
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Possibly the most iconic horror comedy of the 21st century, Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead is the first part of the director’s “Cornetto Trilogy,” which all riff on genre and all star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Shaun is a “zom-rom-com” which sees Pegg’s leading man trying to win back his girlfriend in the face of a zombie apocalypse. It’s achingly British in its humor but has become an international cult classic, with cosplayers regularly dressing as Shaun. It came out in 2004 but still completely holds up today.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
The movie that spawned the excellent TV show is a deeply funny mock-doc about vampires who share a house, written and directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who also star alongside Jonny Brugh and Ben Fransham. Set and shot in Wellington, New Zealand, the humor is silly, self-effacing, and specific. A genuinely hilarious riff on vampire and werewolf tropes.
Psycho Goreman (2020)
One of the most joyful new horror comedies sees an all-powerful force of evil bested by the small girl who inadvertently releases him from cosmic jail. Problem child Mimi and the brother she bullies discover they can control “The Arch-Duke of Nightmares” and rename him Psycho Goreman. They just want to play games, he just wants to destroy the universe. Packed with over-the-top gore, great gags, and a surprising level of sweetness, this is an ’80s-style schlocker with a modern twist.
The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Directed by Drew Goddard, who went on to make the stylish, and star-studded Bad Times at the El Royale, this clever, surprising, love-hate letter to the horror genre is packed with rug pulls, reveals, and gags. The movie juxtaposes a typical gang of teens taking a doom-laden vacation and the white collar workers who are pulling the strings behind the scenes. If you somehow missed it–go watch! Now! If you’ve seen it before, this is a movie that rewards repeat viewing.
Slaxx (2020)
This Canadian eco-horror about, yes, killer trousers, which played the festival circuit before making its way to Shudder, is actually smarter than it appears. Slaxx is set around a trendy designer store which purports to be ethically sound but is anything but. Yes, there are multiple pants-based slayings as a sentient pair of jeans exacts its bloody revenge on the store workers, but there’s also dark satire and a killer sense of humor at work here–and surprisingly a catchy, cool dance routine to boot.
Zombieland (2009)
Zombieland: Double Tap seemed a little late when it came out in 2019, but that shouldn’t detract from the original, which was a refreshing take on the zom-com with great performances from its now-starry cast. Zombieland sees a bunch of misfits who name themselves after their respective hometowns navigate the apocalypse via a strict set of rules. Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Woody Harrelson star in this zippy comedy with heart, and a surprise cameo to die for.
Trick ’r Treat (2007)
If a film ever truly captured the spirit of Halloween it’s this one. Michael Dougherty’s seasonal anthology movie weaves together four stories with a wraparound that brings just the right level of chills and giggles–it manages to be both funny and scary without compromising either. A murderous school principal, a bus driver with a horrible past, teenage girls reclaiming the night, and a little kid dressed in a burlap sack bring the Halloween spirit to life in this cult movie with a cool cast including Brian Cox and Anna Paquin.
Happy Death Day (2017)
This Groundhog Day-style slasher sees college student Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) get murdered on the day before her birthday, only to discover she’s stuck in a time loop and destined to relive the day over and over. It’s up to Tree to work out who’s been killing her, while fixing some bad life choices along the way. Blackly funny with some good kills–even if it is, largely speaking, the same person being killed–Happy Death Day is a glossy production from Blumhouse which spawned a sequel in 2019 that is also worth checking out.
Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Karen Kusama’s tasty teenage satire was somewhat misunderstood at its release, criticized by some for not being funny or scary enough. But in recent years it has been embraced for its feminist themes as Megan Fox’s popular cheerleader Jennifer becomes demonically possessed and begins attacking the boys at her school. Amanda Seyfried is great as Jennifer’s best friend Needy, while Fox shines in her best role. Juno’s Diablo Cody wrote the screenplay, too, so the dialogue is as spiky and sharp as Jennifer’s teeth.
One Cut of the Dead (2017)
Breakout Japanese indie One Cut of the Dead is a film of three parts, and there are three stages of watching. Part one: Why does everyone keep going on about this low-budget zombie film? Part two: OK fine, it’s smarter than I thought, but get a grip people. Part three: OMG One Cut of the Dead is the greatest film ever, I love it so much, it’s so clever and funny and brilliant, I must tell everyone I know about One Cut of the Dead. That’s all you need to know.
Freaky (2020)
It’s a concept so cunning we wonder why it hasn’t been done before. Magic hokum means a teenage girl suddenly swaps bodies with a deranged serial killer. How will she convince anyone that he is really her, while stopping her possessed body from murdering her pals? Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon heads up this quirky slasher comedy which stars Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton having the time of their lives.
Slither (2006)
Before he became a comic book movie darling, James Gunn made his directorial debut with this icky black comedy starring Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Rooker. A small town is invaded by an alien parasite who takes over the body of one of the residents, transforming him into a grotesque, tentacled being intent on breeding and infecting the townsfolk. Influenced by David Cronenberg’s Shivers and The Brood, this is tongue-in-cheek body horror only for the strongest of stomachs.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
